D of E go for gold
April 11-16th 2009. Snowdownia National Park Gold Duke of Edinburgh's Award Formal Pracrice Expedition.
Sutton Youth Service saw its new staff team take its first Gold Group out on their formal practice expedition to the Snowdonia National Park. 11 Young people aged 16 and over have been training since last year and were let loose in the wilds of north wales. They spent part of the time accompanied by the staff team, but much of the time they were alone in the hills and mountains to test their skills, fitness. team work, problem solving skills and mental abilities to the highest levels. The two teams of 5 and 6 had planned all aspects of their 4 day, 3 night expedition.
Along the way they crossed bogs and walked paths over high passes, carried and cooked all their food, and got water from streams and lakes. The groups would meet at their wild camp sites where they were in complete isolation. Their bathroom facilites were a garden trowel! This was not for the faint hearted.
Having now successfully completed all teir training they are now preparing for their externally Assessed Expedition in the Lake District in August We will keep you informed
